Abstract

The study examined the impact of torrents resulting from Storm Daniel on the valleys of natural pastures in the South Jabal Al Akhdar region, located in northeastern Libya. The importance of this study lies in determining the extent of change that the region has been subjected to in terms of vegetation cover, represented by the valleys of Adwan, Samalus, Al-Hamamah, Al-Tha’ban, and Balatar. The study aims to know the current situation of the valleys and compare it with the previous situation of those valleys before Storm Daniel. Vegetation cover was studied by plotting squares as given in the modified Braun Blanquet (1951) method. Four points were identified for each valley to place squares, and 20 squares were drawn in the entire area, the area of ​​each square being 25 square meters, in the year 2020 before the Daniel storm, Then the same steps were repeated after the storm in 2023, to determine the extent of change that had occurred in those valleys, and all known types of plants found inside the squares were recorded, plants that were not identified were classified, and all required measurements were taken. The results showed that the Samalos Valley and the Snake Valley are among the best valleys in all measurements of vegetation cover. We also found that there is a positive effect of floods on some valleys in addition to its negative effects on others, such as the erosion of Wadi Al Hamama and the spread of gravel.
