This study aims at identifying the role of basic education teachers in developing the values of citizenship among the younger generation. The study taps into the teachers’ conviction of the importance of developing the values of citizenship among students by identifying the practices intended to achieve this goal. The study also endeavors to determine the nature and resources of the educational environment and its role in developing values of citizenship among students. The study was conducted on a sample of (100) male and female teachers of basic education in the schools of the city of Al-Bayda, Libya. The results of the study indicate that a great number of the sample members discuss with their students a host of topics that enhance developing the values of citizenship. On the other hand, the results revealed that the majority of the studied sample believe that there is a lack of school activities that contribute to instilling the values of citizenship among students, in addition to the lack of teacher development and training programs in this vein.
