Domestic Violence Against Women: University Female Students as a Model A Field

Study on a Sample of Female Students at the Faculty of Arts and Sciences – Al-Marj

Abstract

Domestic violence against women is considered a serious social issue that constitutes a clear violation
of human rights. It has profound effects on the individual, the family, and society as a whole. The
severity of this phenomenon increases when it affects university female students, given the sensitivity
of this stage in shaping personality and social and psychological development.This study aims to
identify the most prominent forms of domestic violence experienced by university female students,
measure its extent and frequency, and examine the characteristics of both abused women and
perpetrators. It also seeks to analyze the relationship between domestic violence and certain social and
economic variables. The study adopts a descriptive correlational approach, utilizing a social survey
method based on a sample. A questionnaire was administered to a stratified random sample consisting
of (121) female students out of a total population of (2609) students enrolled in the Faculty of Arts and
Sciences in Al-Marj during the academic year (2016–2017.)The findings indicate that domestic
violence against university female students is an existing and multifaceted phenomenon, significantly
influenced by social and economic factors within the family. This highlights the necessity of enhancing
community awareness and activating legal and preventive frameworks to reduce this phenomenon .
