Abstract

The current study aimed at knowing the most important methods of parental treatment (the Punishment Method, the Love Withdrawal Method and the Guidance Method), which may affect the self-esteem and self appreciation of the students, who are the sample of the study. The study aimed as well at knowing the relationship between the three methods of parental treatments and the students' self-esteem and its dimensions (the child's positive perspective of himself, the child's negative perspective of himself as well as the others perspective of the child) Moreover, knowing the differences in the parental treatments that the sample of the study had. The sample of the study consisted of 200 students at the sixth grade in Al-Marj city for the academic year 2016-2017. The study tools included the measurement of the parental treatment prepared by Abed Al-Nofaee in 1988 and the measurement of self-esteem prepared by Nissreen Mansour in 2008. The researcher reached the following results:
1- The highest percentage was (80%) for the punishment method used by mothers while it was (53%) for fathers. On the other hand, the Love Withdrawal method was (40%) for mothers and (70%) for fathers, meanwhile; the Guidance Method had a close average percentage with (35%) for mothers and (30%) for fathers.
2- There is a correlation between the Punishment Method (for both mothers and fathers) and self-esteem. Also the study showed that the Guidance Method is statistically insignificant, which explains the weak relationship between the Guidance Method (the directory) for both (mothers and fathers) and self-esteem. Also the study showed that there is a relationship between the Love Withdrawal Method and self-esteem.
3- There are significant statistical differences between the Punishment Method and the average of males and females for mothers. On the other hand, there are no such differences for fathers.
4- There is a statistical significance relation between males and females in self-esteem
